Brass Pocket Sextant (Code: S9) Also called a box sextant. Edward Troughton invented this unique instrument in the early 17th century. It opens up with the cover that becomes a grip for taking readings. To take the image, a little scope pulls out from the side. A filter also swings out, when not needed it folds back inside. The readings are read of the scale with the tiny adjustable magnifying glass on the top. It is 8 cm in diameter and 4 cm deep with the cover under the top. Brass Abney Level (Code: S10) The Abney Level is named after Captain William Abney of the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, England. It is also called an "Angle Sextant" and measures the angle of inclination. Aligning the bubble with a line in the scope helps read the angle of inclination off the vernier scale on the side.
